What is IoT?
IoT (Internet of Things) means that physical objects (= things) are connected via the internet.
IoT is not new in itself. It has been long possible to connect devices wirelessly via the internet. However, so far this has been limited due to the high cost (equipment, connection costs,…) and technical limitations (energy consumption, range,…).
Recent technological evolutions remove these limitations and allow us to connect physical objects via the internet in a way and scale that was previously unimaginable. To such an extent that it is sometimes called the “Internet of Everything”.
Connecting physical objects generates a great deal of data (= Big Data) which is analysed, links are made, processes are controlled and optimised,… the previously passive objects are activated and are “smart”.
